Prison escapee, Desmond James was re-captured on Friday evening by ranks of the “D” Division at Canal #1 West Bank Demerara.
This is according to Police “D” Division Commander, Leslie James during an informative group discussion last evening.
Based on information received, Desmond James was found at around 22:00hrs in a shack in Canal Number 1.
Commander James said that the captured fugitive ” indicated that he was heading to Essequibo. He was found with a knife and a few pieces of clothing.”
According to a neighbour, the man was seen camping out at the location- which is said to be located on Government Reserve in Cameron Dam- since Thursday morning around 07:00hrs.
As such, the police were contacted and it was during a sweep of the area by the ranks that the 24-year-old escapee was arrested.
On Sunday last, prisoners from the Camp Street Prison staged an attack on Correctional Officers and set the Penitentiary alight, almost completely gutting the building.
During the mass confusion, six inmates- all charged with murder- escaped confinement. James was subsequently identified to be one of the six.
The other escapees are said to be Mark Royden Durant, Uree Varswyck, Stafrei Hopkinson Alexander, Cobena Sephens and Cornelius Thomas.
Durant, also known as “Royden Williams” and “Smallie”, was charged along with several others for the 2008 Bartica massacre.
The manhunt to re-capture the other five is still ongoing.
