President David Granger has granted Presidential pardons to five female prisoners from the New Amsterdam Prison to coincide with the Christmas season.
Those women who “have each served a portion of their respective sentences for offences ranging from larceny, fraud and giving false oath” have been identified as:
- Maxine Baird Sampson, 27
- Shellon David, 24
- Ronella Junor, 27
- Shabana Asgar, 37
- Reina Vargas, 54
According to a release from the Ministry of Public Security, the President “pursuant to powers under article 188(2) of the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, has granted Presidential Pardons to five (5) women prisoners whom he considered fit and proper to receive such pardons. These Presidential Pardons shall be effective as from December 25, 2017 in observance of the Festival of Christmas 2017.”
“It is expected that this expression of compassion and humanity by His Excellency will result in families being re-united, and the pardoned offenders leading good and useful lives hereon” the release said.
