[www.inewsguyana.com] – President Donald Ramotar along with First Lady Deolatchmie Ramotar and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds lead a memorial walk from Queen’s College, Georgetown to the University of Guyana – Turkeyen Campus – to commemorate the institution’s 50th anniversary.
The University began classes in 1963 at Queens College and then moved to Turkeyen in October 1969 after the new campus was built.
The walk was aimed at showing solidarity for the nation’s university, raising awareness of its contribution, leading alumni and well wishers back to their alma mater and providing a safe space for dialogue about the role of the nation’s university in nation building and what it means to persons who are marking.
The participants of the walk were treated to a Guyanese buffet breakfast during which they heard addresses from several speakers including UG’s Vice Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
Delivering the feature address Former Lecturer and Chancellor Rudy Insanally told the gathering that “50 years in the life of any organization is no mean achievement, it is a confirmation of UG’s ability to endure and the next 50 and beyond” adding that “to this great credit the University continues to produce a great number of citizens trained and able to take our country into the 21st century.”
He paid tribute to Former President the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan whose vision it was to create an institution of higher learning to the benefit all Guyanese.
He believes this current Vice Chancellor has generated fresh hope for the renaissance of the institution and its transformation into the centre of excellence for Guyana and the entire region.
