[www.inewsguyana.com] – President Donald Ramotar came in for high commendations from his political party – the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) – for withholding his assent to the Local Government Bill.
PPP’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee is hopeful that the Parliamentary Opposition will use the opportunity to undo the errors in the Bill, as pointed out by the President, so that Neighbourhood Democratic Council can benefit from the task force’s recommendations in the initial Bill.
President Ramotar had stated that did not assent to the Bill because it is unconstitutional.
The PPP/C on Monday (December 2) also reiterated its commitment to the Holding of Local Government Elections.
Rohee extended congratulations to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for its preparations in this regard.
According to Rohee, the Party continues to monitor other initiative in preparing for the hosting of Local Government Elections [possibly early next year] particularly the works shops being conducted by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to educate and sensitize people of the process.
He said members of the PPP have attended and participated in the seminars and workshops and is in constant contact with villages and communities.
On a separate note, Rohee said the Central Committee members will be head to East Berbice, Corentyne to hold a community outreach.
He made it clear that this was not in any way part of an elections campaign.
