Two days after a lone gunman walked into a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida and shot dead 50 persons, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is calling for enhanced international co-operation to stamp out terrorism which has reached alarming proportions globally.
This is according to General Secretary of the PPP/C Clement Rohee who during a press conference today stated that his Party condemns in the strongest possible terms the ‘wanton and cold blooded’ shooting to death of those 50 persons in Orlando, Florida.
“It is recorded as the worst killing in recent American history and came on the heels of a series of terrorist related activities which have left scores of people dead, not to mention the untold number who suffered physical and emotional trauma as a result of such barbaric actions. Actions such as these can only be the work of sick and warp minds regardless of the motive or motives they may wish to attribute in justification of their murderous actions. The fact that the killings took place at a soft target is suggestive of a terrorist activity which is a clear violation of the norms of civilized beings,” said Rohee.
He posited that it is clear that terrorism has now become a global phenomenon which requires a collective response of the international community to “defeat and seriously injure it.”
According to the Party’s General Secretary, the PPP/C shares the pain of all those affected by this barbaric act and extend its deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of those killed and seriously injured.
Reports are that Omar Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, Florida, carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed ‘Pulse’ club about 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting in an indiscriminate manner.
In the process, 50 persons were shot dead and at least 53 others were wounded, the U.S. police stated.
It must be mentioned that during the attack, Mateen called 911 to pledge allegiance to the ISIS terror group and mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers, according to a U.S. official.
This move by Mateen has been recorded as the deadliest terror attack in the United States since 9/11 when terrorists hijacked two planes and had them fly into the Twin Towers killing several persons.
