[www.inewsguyana.com] – The ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says the intention of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to employ an IT Manager and establish a Media Monitoring Unit (MMU) is most encouraging, particularly with elections looming.
“Be it Local Government or General, this is certainly an encouraging move to ensure our democracy is protected and Guyanese are afforded their rights as is stated in the Constitution of Guyana,” PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee said.
He told reporters at a news conference this morning, Monday September 29 that the Party welcomes the decision by the Elections Commission to embrace the donor community.
“The Party views the initial steps taken towards soliciting international donors in monitoring the electoral process in Guyana as a positive move, in the right direction, towards achieving free and fair elections,” Rohee added.
He said, however, that the PPP remains concerned with “the politically orchestrated daily smear campaigns and character assassinations” targeting some PPP leaders by certain sections of the media and is hopeful that the proposed MMU at GECOM will be established soonest and be allowed to function freely.
The PPP has also welcomed the setting up of the Joint International Technical Assistance [JITA] to aid the transparency of the entire electoral process; saying it is a mechanism it has been lobbying for since the commencement of the Registration process.
“Again we call for the urgent implementation of this decision in a timely manner and for it to be free from political interference.”
Meanwhile, Rohee said Party activists and supporters continue their house-to-house work in checking the Preliminary List of Electors and talking to people on the ground.
The PPP has reportedly checked almost 85% of the PLE so far. Rohee also reiterated the Party’s commitment to support GECOM in its efforts to have an accurate voters list and in the holding of elections which are free, transparent and free from fear.
