The People’s Progressive Party extends Greeting to the Muslim community and indeed, all Guyanese, on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr. The Holy month of Ramadan, marked by fasting and self-sacrifice, has come to an end. Muslims all over the world are now observing this occasion by giving to the needy and awakening a spirit of brotherhood and togetherness.
The PPP commends our Muslim brothers and sisters for reminding us, and the entire world, of the lessons of Ramadan – sacrifice, selflessness, reaching out to others and the abandonment of greed.
These moral values today are of great significance to us as individuals and to our society at large for they provide a platform to look at the world in a new and caring way and create a new enabling environment within which to find solutions to major challenges.
Today, we live in a world that is still deeply divided, and plagued by hunger, poverty, disease, wars, and underdevelopment. Eid-Ul-Fitr and Ramadan, remind us there is a need for world leaders to adopt a new vision based on these principles, in order to end these enormous challenges. Eid-Ul-Fitr and Ramadan remind us that if the old thinking of self-interest continues to prevail, there will be no progress on these problems.
In Guyana, the PPP and your PPP/C government, practices policies geared to bring about happiness and prosperity to all Guyanese. The vision to provide for all our countrymen regardless of creed, race or religion is in keeping with these principles. Also, to give access to all Guyanese basic services – health, water, housing, education, care for the children and the elderly, and the vulnerable and to protect their human rights. Further, the deepening of our democracy, uniting our nation for national development, are all in keeping with the principles of Ramadan and Eid-Ul-Fitr.
Let us use this most important occasion to reflect on the deep meaning of sacrifice, love of mankind and working together for a better life for ourselves and our country.
