[www.inewsguyana.com] – The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has come out in full force, condemning the Kaieteur News column ‘Dem Boys Seh’ for attacking the integrity of Town Clerk, Carol Sooba.
At its weekly press briefing on Monday, December 23 General Secretary of the Party, Clement Rohee said that the recent attacks on Sooba cries out for the enforcement of professional ethics and standards in journalism.
“The PPP strongly condemns this’ satire “Dem Boys Seh” that attacks the integrity of this woman, by insinuating that she is a “night nurse” aka prostitute,” Rohee said.
He questioned, “How much more of this character assassination and gutter journalism practiced by Kaieteur News must the reading public endure?”
Rohee further noted that if the Guyana Press Association is powerless to exert pressure on its members to act responsibly and professional as journalists, it may be time for a professional, independent body to do so.
The governing Party blamed the Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green for spearheading the attacks to discredit and disqualify Sooba.
“The City of Georgetown has been transformed from the “Garden City of the Caribbean” to the ‘Garbage City’ under his stewardship… so much for ‘qualification’.
According to Rohee, the PPP is convinced that the real fight to rid the Council of Carol Sooba has nothing to do with her qualifications or ability to perform the duties of Town Clerk, but rather, her stand against the high level of corruption within the Mayor and City Council.
