Investigations are on-going into a case where a porter and a driver of a company which is involved in the sales of confectionery and snacks, tried to rob their employer(s) by staging a robbery at Harlem, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on Thursday night.
According to a police press release, ranks responded to a report of an alleged armed robbery on the day in question where the porter and driver from the company said they had been “held up by gunmen” and relieved of $1.2M in cash, a laptop computer and their cellular phones.
INews understands that the two ‘victims’ reported to the authorities that around 18:40h on Thursday they were travelling in their canter truck when another motor vehicle forced them off of the public road on the WCD.
The porter and driver alleged that two men, who had firearms in their possession, exited the vehicle and held them up taking away the above mentioned items.
The press release stated that the two ‘victims’ told ranks that the gunmen escaped after locking them in the rear of the canter truck and they were later rescued by passersby who heard them knocking against the walls of the vehicle.
“However, under questioning by the police, the two ‘victims’ admitted that they had staged the robbery with the involvement of three other men who were given the money and cell phones after pretending to be carrying out the robbery. One of the ‘bandits’ was subsequently arrested, and a part of the stolen cash and the two cell phones were recovered. The laptop computer was also recovered in the vicinity of the staged robbery,” the police said.
Meanwhile, the three men are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
