A young Police recruit was on Thursday fined $50,000 by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore for theft of a cellular phone.
Nicholas Harvey, 21, of 3072 section A, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on Sunday, August 14, 2016, at Felix Austin Police Training College, he stole 1 Blu cellular phone valued $27,000, property of Durant Lafleur.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Harvey only joined the college two weeks ago and on the day in question the virtual complainant (VC), Lafleur, left his cellphone on a table charging and went to the washroom. Upon returning the VC noticed the phone was missing.
The defendant was contacted and admitted to stealing the phone.
The unrepresented recruit told the court that he never had any previous brushes with the law and as such he was begging for leniency.
