[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Police Constable was remanded to prison on Wednesday, June 10 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for the offences of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
Orin Sergeant is stationed at the East La Penitence Police Station and is a serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). He pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which alleged that on June 05, at Mahaica Public Road, East Coast Demerara, he had thirty seven 7.32×3 ammunition in his possession, when he is not the holder of a firearm licence.
It was further alleged that on the same day, he also had an AK 47 rifle in his possession. The prosecution stated that the Police rank was intercepted at a police road block.
Sergeant and the other occupants were asked to exit the vehicle with their belongings to which they complied. According to Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru, a search was carried out on the defendant’s bag and the illegal items were found.
The Court heard that the AK 47 rifle is not the property of the Police Force. The police rank was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Mahaica Magistrate’s Court for June 16.
