In light of the deadly riots which took place during last week at the Camp Street Prison that claimed the lives of 17 inmates, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched investigations into the matter to determine whether the prisoners were intentionally left in the lockups to perish in the blaze.
Allegations by other inmates who were confined in the penitentiary during the fiasco were that instructions had been passed down from at least one senior prison officer to let the prisoners die in the fire.
According to Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, he was contacted to commence investigations into these claims with the aim of verifying whether or not the prisoners had been deliberately locked up instead of being escorted out to safety when the fire started by the prisoner officers on duty.
Meanwhile, ranks of the GPF who had been injured and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) while providing assistance at the Camp Street Prison during the chaos have been treated and sent away.
