A police constable was today placed on $200,000 bail when he was brought before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty to answer a rape charge.
Twenty – one – year old Kevin Bruster pleaded not guilty to offence. It is alleged that on May 15 at Sherima Police Outpost located at 14 Miles Issano in Region 7, he had sex with a woman without her consent.
Attorney – at – law Latchmi Rahamat represented the accused and while making an application for reasonable bail, related to the court that her client was on duty on the day in question when the woman and a group of persons came to be checked in.
According to the Attorney, the accused checked in each individual which included the complainant after which they left the police outpost. Rahamat said her client is denying the allegation brought before him, noting that at no point her client could have committed such an offence at the police outpost without anyone witnessing the ordeal.
In light of the seriousness, prevalence and the penalty attached to such an offence, the prosecutor objected to bail. However, his objection was overruled by the Magistrate who granted Bruster bail in the sum of $200,000.
The accused is also required to lodge his passport and report to the police station every Friday. Kevin Bruster will return to court on September 3. [Royan Abrams]
