One suspect has been held for the murder of a mechanic from Belle West, West Bank Demerara, who succumbed to his injuries six days after allegedly being beaten by a group of drunken neighbours.
After Police investigations into the death of 31-year old Yogeshwar Shivcharran, a male suspect had been taken in Police custody. This follows reports that three women connected to several male suspects were also questioned but released on Monday.
According to information reaching INews, the file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice and charges are expected to be laid against the suspect, after a post mortem examination is performed on Shivcharran’s body.
The dead auto mechanic’s relatives explained on Monday that the man suffered from regular seizures which became worse over the past two weeks.
Reports stated that Shivcharran in a mental episode on the evening of Monday, July 4, removed his clothing and approached his neighbours who were consuming alcohol next door.
INews was told that the men in a drunken state became annoyed by Shivcharran’s behaviour and reportedly pelted him with beer bottles before allegedly beating him to his head and about the body. The injured man was treated at the West Demerara Regional Hospital before succumbing to his injuries late Sunday evening.
His common-law wife Aresa Persaud had explained that at the time of the alleged beating, she and her daughter had locked themselves in the house as they were afraid of the now dead mechanic’s behaviour.
Persaud further stated that her husband then went downstairs and it was a little while later that she heard what sounded like the beating.
Persaud added that relatives made several reports to the La Grange Police Station last Tuesday and onwards, but no suspects were held at that time. Shivcharran was a father of two.
