[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Police Constable, attached to the Intelligence Unit of the Leonora Police Station, was allegedly beaten on Christmas Day (December 25) during the Vergenoegen Village Day celebration on the East Bank of Essequibo.
There were reports that the Force’s firearm was also taken away during the fight, however this was dismissed by Commander of ‘D’ Division, Ian Amsterdam.
The Commander told iNews during a telephone interview that during the incident, the firearm fell down and was immediately recovered at the scene.
He also told iNews that a suspect is in police custody, while the police are on the hunt for the others.
iNews was informed that the Constable was reportedly involved in an argument with persons connected to a popular sound system when he was beaten.
iNews understands that the Constable sought medical attention as he complained of feeling pain in his body. The ‘D’ Division Commander says he was not fully briefed on what really transpired since the Constable only related little to them so far.
The Commander explained that the Constable was on a “special assignment” at the time of the incident.
