[www.inewsguyana.com] – Police have confirmed receiving reports and are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a Region #2 teen by a number of persons over a period of time.
In a statement on Wednesday, the police clarified that the teen was not gang raped, as suggested by one of the local dailies.
“The reports received in this matter on October 05, 2015, indicate that the victim was allegedly sexually assaulted by a number of persons over a period of time and not gang- raped on any one occasion as stated in the article,” the statement added.
During the investigations a number of men were arrested and subsequently released on bail.
Contrary to what is stated in the article, no one has yet been charged in the matter and the Police are currently seeking legal advice.
On Tuesday, APNU/AFC Councillor on the Region #2 Democratic Council, Mr. Naithram called for Probation and Welfare Officers of the Pomeroon – Supenaam Region to address the situation.
The Councillor, speaking at the statutory meeting of the RDC on Tuesday, said the terrified child and her relatives need to be given more attention in terms of counselling.
Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt said he is very passionate issues relating to abuse, especially child abuse.
He called for the matter to be properly investigated.
