[www.inewsguyana.com] – In light of the recent upsurge in crime in Guyana, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell is pushing for convicted murderers to be hanged.
At a public meeting with Meten – Meer – Zorg residents on the West Coast of Demerara on Sunday September 22 at the community’s primary school, the Commissioner said, “Every week, we should hang two.”
However, the Commissioner explained that the power does not lie in the hands of the Police Force. He told the residents that currently there are persons in the prison, who were sentenced to death but this can only be executed when the President of Guyana Donald Ramotar signs the order.
Meanwhile, one resident also called for the death penalty to be enacted. The female resident said, “Bring back the electric chair… When you sleeping these people just come pon you…We must put an end, not only talk, talk, talk and we tired mining them…”
In relation to the recent murder of Meten – Meer – Zorg businessman, 27 – year – old Zulficar Namdar, the Police Commissioner said that he was very confident that the police would crack the case.
“I want it to be known that this is not the end of it. We have done our part. It’s now to the judicial stage and we expect that you, who have to give evidence, will attend court and give evidence. We need to have these persons incarcerated. They must not be allowed to come into the community until about 15 or 20 years after and if some of them are not hanged… so I am appealing to you.”
On Friday last, seven persons were remanded to prison for the murder and robbery of the businessman.
