Police Academy’s junior officers course begins today

Today marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the Guyana Police Force as the first cohort of aspiring leaders embark on the Junior Officers Course #1 of 2024. The opening ceremony took place at the Officers’ Training Centre, Camp Street, Georgetown, on Monday (February 5th, 2024).

To start the opening ceremony, a Christian prayer was done by Woman Cadet Officer Ms Oseana Alleyne, followed by Hindu and Muslim prayers led by Assistant Superintendent Mr Purushatam Persaud and Cadet Officer Mr Elroy Khan, respectively.

Over the next three months, through a structured curriculum encompassing theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and interactive classroom sessions, participants will engage in an intensive and comprehensive programme designed to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and mindset to excel in their respective roles.

Among the esteemed participants are representatives from the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Prison Service, alongside counterparts from CARICOM member states such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts, Bahamas, Grenada, and St. Lucia. Additionally, it includes individuals from the Guyana Revenue Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, City Constabulary, and the Geology and Mines Commission.

The training aims to offer hands-on skills in Leadership Abilities, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Ethical Conduct, Knowledge of Organizational Policies, and Theme Management Skills, among other pertinent aspects.

By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications and case studies, the programme aims to empower participants with a holistic skill set and a deep understanding of contemporary practices essential for success in their roles.

The participants of the Junior Officers Course will be accommodated at the Police Academy, where meticulous attention has been given to refurbishing the barrack rooms to create a comfortable and conducive living environment for the duration of their training.

Each room has been thoughtfully outfitted with crisp linens and modern amenities, ensuring that ranks can find solace in their home away from home. In addition to the refurbished barrack rooms, the academy boasts newly constructed facilities, including a swimming pool and a gym, providing opportunities for relaxation and physical fitness.
The centrepiece of the academy’s infrastructure is a state-of-the-art classroom equipped with cutting-edge learning equipment and computers, fostering a dynamic learning environment that not only equips the officers with essential tools for their profession but also cultivates a spirit of innovation and adaptability necessary for modern policing.

Delivering the vote of thanks was the Coordinator of the Guyana Police Force Academy Zara Computer Centres, Assistant Superintendent, Gladwin Hanover, who thanked the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner (Administration) for their unwavering vision and steadfast commitment to overcoming challenges to bring this programme to fruition.
