A woman who attempted to smuggle cannabis to a prisoner in the Lusignan Prison has been caught in the act and handed over to the Police.
Tiffany Grant of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was arrested on Wednesday morning after she was found with a quantity of cannabis while at the prison on the East Coast of Demerara. Authorities found the drugs, amounting to 9.7 grams, in a black plastic bag wrapped with transparent plastic in the woman’s bag.
The woman was handed over to the Police after they arrived at the location. She remains in custody, pending charges.
Attempts to smuggle items into the prisons have prompted the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, to re-emphasise that the prison authorities have seen an increased attempt by civilians to smuggle prohibited items into the prison.
Elliot said smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is an offence that has serious consequences. He has called on civilians to recognise the dangers at which they place themselves, society, inmates, and officers by engaging in the trade of contraband within the walls of the prison.
