[www.inewsguyana.com] – Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence made an impromptu visit to the Palms, Brickdam, Georgetown on Monday, 23 November 2015 following complaints by the inmates there.
According to a release from the Ministry, Lawrence said residents of the State-run institution are complaining about conditions of the Wards, especially on Monday mornings.
The Minister said residents of the Palms are unhappy with the performance of staff working the night shift “who do not complete their responsibilities”.
“As a result they create difficulties for their colleagues who take over from them especially on Monday mornings,” the Ministry noted.
“Having visited the Palms I have to have follow up meeting(s) with the Administrator,” of the institution, Lawrence said.
Her unexpected stop at the geriatric institution will also result in an urgent face lift for the aging wooden structure and emergency works to fix the plumbing system, Lawrence said.
“This is priority. What has to be done is not huge but technical. If there is no funding remaining in the 2015 budgetary estimates I will be seeking emergency funding,” to get this done before the end of this year, Lawrence promised.
this is sad, you people have no heart, how could you people treat the elderly like this. thats sad, you people talk shit about the new Government , this shit was like that for years, this is so bad
I totally agree with this question. These seniors are destitute residence of this home not inmates. Inmates are those in a jail setting. This reminds me of the much used word UnEARTH by local reporters when they write about the police finding a weapon. For example in a car or bedroom. They seem to love to describe this discovery as Unearth. Backward Guyana.
Why is the writer of this story, referring to the residents of this home as inmates? Sad
Good on you minister. There is so much like this to be done and so few people that care.
