[www.inewsguyana.com] – An overseas based Guyanese man, Mumtaz Baksh and his 44 – year – old son Rafmat Baksh were killed on the Land of Plenty Public Road on the Essequibo Coast at around 14:30 hours Friday afternoon (January 17) while walking home.
They were struck down by a car, and the driver is currently in police custody. iNews understands that the two were struck down just opposite the rice factory. Reports indicate that both men were hurled into the air on impact and suffered serious head injuries.
iNews was told that the younger Baksh’s head also connected to a light post and his scalp was actually torn off, before his body landed into a nearby trench.
According to reports, the 72 – year – old Canadian citizen and his wife Zoorul Baksh had returned to Guyana last December for the Christmas holidays and were still enjoying their vacation when tragedy struck.
The dead man’s daughter, Zoori Baksh said her father, mother, herself and other relatives went to the Anna Regina market to do shopping and were returning home in a car when her father requested to get off at Land Of Plenty, a short distance from his home to do a little walking in terms of exercising.
She told iNews that his son, Rafmat also decided to accompany him on the walk. According to the daughter, her mother and the rest of the family members returned home and within minutes received the dreadful news that Mumtaz and Rafmat were killed in an accident.
The tragic death of the father and son has plunged the family into a state of shock and left villagers in sadness. The man’s wife cried openly for her husband and son and asked the question repeatedly “how will I go back to Canada without my husband?” [Rajendra Prabhulall]
