[www.inewsguyana.com] – Persons both young and old lined up for hours on Friday, February 27 at the headquarters of Food for the Poor Guyana Inc to benefit from the organization’s first major distribution exercise for 2015.
The exercise catered for over 500 persons all of whom received one each of 13 items which included food stuff, over the counter drugs and clothing among other items.
Senior Manager – Gifts & Kinds Department of the organization, Jimeel Davis said the items will go a long way in assisting those in need. He explained that Food for the Poor has diversified the way it operates in an effort to meet the needs of those seeking assistance throughout the country.
This has seen officers from the organization deployed into the field to personally meet and help the needy.
“We will be going to communities that we have never been to, we are planning to go to the Orealla/Siparuta area to do some more work there. We’re trying to reach region 8 and other areas; we’re also going to some places in Linden. We went to quite a few last year and we are trying to go to the ones we didn’t last year, this year.”
Apart from the organization’s overseas donors, a number of local businesses contributed food items to today’s initiative.
“We depend on a lot of local donors here and we have been appealing to the general public and business community for more support. Right here today as you can see we got some stuff from Beepat’s including their Ozone soap powder, we had stuff from Beharry including Chowmein then we had some curry powder from Continental, so we have some local donors who have come on board and were encouraging more businesses to come onboard.”
iNews spoke to an 85 year-old grandmother who praised the organization for its kind gesture.
Meanwhile, a 12 – year-old who stayed home from school today, was sent by his mother to benefit from the help of the organization. [Tracey Khan – Drakes]
