Guyana currently has over 3300 active Covid-19 cases – a worrying development which Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony says persons should take note of.
In light of these rising numbers, he is encouraging persons to get vaccinated, noting that it is the only way to protect themselves against the life-threatening virus.
He made the remarks during today’s Covid-19 update, where he noted that within the past 24 hours, the country recorded 313 new cases from 2346 tests. This is the highest number of new cases recorded in a single day since the pandemic hit Guyana in March 2020.
“We have now 3368 persons with active Covid across Guyana. Of those, 1955 are in Region Four and a another 805 in Region Three,” the Minister stated.
According to the Health Minister, persons need to take more precautions to protect themselves, noting that the Task Force alone cannot enforce the rules.
“Monitoring has got to be everybody’s business. If people are non-compliant and we see those persons, then we should tell them, so its not just a Task Force business where somebody is going to be running around, trying to enforce all of the rules,” he posited.
There are currently 141 persons hospitalised across the country, with 31 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Of this amount, 17 are pregnant women.
So far, 339,206 adults have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, which represents 66.1 per cent of the adult population, while 175,848 or 34.3 per cent have been fully immunised.
For children within the age range of 12 to 17, a total 19,131 have received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccines.
