The much anticipated Aliann Pompey Invitational Track and Field Meet is set for this Saturday June 18, just four days away at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara from 15:00 Hrs.
In excess of 30 international athletes are expected to compete with overseas and locally based Guyanese athletes and at the same time push for qualification for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
Athletes are expected from Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Haiti, Ireland, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America and the US Virgin Islands.
Some of the sponsored events are the Fly Jamaica’s women 100m, the Ramada Princess Hotel 110m hurdles, the Quality Plus Men’s 200m, the GUYSUCO Men’s triple jump the GOA men’s 400m and the Digicel men’s 100m and women’s 200m.
All events will have cash incentives but according to Pompey, the 100m and 400m (the premier races) will have the most, with to the top three finishers receiving $US1000, $US600 and $US300.
Sponsors of the event include Digicel 4G, Fly Jamaica, Quality Plus, Ramada Princess Hotel, GUYSUCO and Banks DIH.
Meanwhile, Allian Pompey the 400 metres specialist who has represented Guyana at the Summer Olympics on four separate occasions (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012) will be the special guest on TVG’s Sports Beat tonight at 21:00 Hrs.
The 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold medalist will bring viewers up to date with the long awaited international meet including disclosing the big names that are expected to be on show at Guyana’s premier track and field facility.
