[www.inewsguyana.com]The Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) is of the belief that the Opposition is benefitting financially and politically from criminal activities and it is against this backdrop that they [the Opposition] are not in support of the Anti – Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Amendment Bill.

The governing PPP in an issued statement outlined a number of criminal activities that occurred in Guyana, and linked it to the Opposition political parties.

According to the PPP, “That they [the Opposition] are aware of the devastating impact its non-passage will have on the economy and on the life of every single Guyanese, we are not in doubt. They are prepared to disregard calls made by important stakeholders, including, the labour movement, the private sector, the insurance industry, the banking industry and the manufacturing industry. They must be aware of the political consequences of ignoring their constituents and these stakeholders. Yet, they are bent on rejecting this Bill. The arguments which they have advanced are all absurd and incredulous, having regard to what is at stake.”

The Party questioned, “Why would politicians expose their constituency to such dangers, and put their very political survival on the line in this manner? More importantly, why would politicians want to block a law which is intended to rid the financial and commercial sector of the most prevalent, pernicious and violent crimes of the twenty first century, such as, money-laundering and terrorism, when the entire world is moving in that direction. These deep and probing questions must be asked.”

In this regard, the PPP stated that “the Opposition in Guyana are protecting the interests of money-launderers and terrorists, for which they are the recipients of substantial benefits.”
