The area has already been identified by the Local Government Ministry for the construction of a new market tarmac at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
This is according to Minister within the Ministry, Norman Whittaker. However, although the site has been identified, the Minister noted that construction will not commence until permission is granted by the Public Works Ministry.
“To expand that lane, it would have meant that the four lane will fall on some section of the marker, and in the interest of the safety of vendors and buyers, we identified a specific area with the support of the NDC and the Ministry of Public Works,” Minister Whittaker said.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held with the Mon Repos Neighbourhood Democratic Council and members of the Market committee on Monday to discuss issues affecting the vendors.
At that meeting the Minister said issues such as drainage and garbage collection and disposal were raised. [Akash Ramlackhan]
