While flood relief efforts continue across the hinterland, NEW GPC INC has donated medical supplies to the Public Health Ministry to prevent any infectious or airborne diseases, as the need for health care assistance mounts in Regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
At a handing over ceremony at the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Wednesday, a NEW GPC representative indicated that “one of the core values of the company is to be involved in the communities we serve and especially in times of natural disasters.”
NEW GPC INC, through an official statement, stated that relief would be provided to “hundreds of residents in the affected communities to treat any health related illness which arise due to the flooding in Regions Seven and Eight”.
Among the items donated by NEW GPC were Doxycycline which is used as a prophylaxis for Leptospirosis, Dimenhydrinate tabs and liquids which are used to treat vomiting and diarrhea, Co-trimoxazole suspension which is an antibiotic, various other liquid preparations, creams, ointments, disinfectant and multivitamins.
Flash floods this past week surfaced when intense rains caused the Potaro and nearby rivers to overtop their banks, displacing or affecting in excess of 3200 persons.One of the hardest hit villages was Kaibarupai where 113 residents were flooded, 26 of whom had their homes completely washed away.
