[www.inewsguyana.com] – Ravindra Samaroo, one of the prisoners who broke out of the New Amsterdam prison on August 12, has been charged with escaping from lawful custody.
Samaroo appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer in the New Amsterdam Magistrate court on August 14 after he was recaptured. Handcuffed and with shackles on his feet, Samaroo was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. He is expected to return on August 31 for report.
At the time of his escape, Samaroo was on remand for armed robbery. iNews was told that the man was found hiding in a clump of bushes in Cow Dam New Amsterdam after he escaped. Prison and police ranks on Thursday evening called upon Samaroo to surrender to which he complied and was promptly arrested unharmed.
The search continues for the other prisoner, Lennox Patterson, who also escaped from the facility. The two broke out of the New Amsterdam Prison on Wednesday evening and made good their escape with the aid of several bed sheets which they tied together and let themselves down from the prison building.
They then scaled the fence and escaped, undetected by prison guards.
