Three persons are now homeless after a fire completely destroyed their three-bedroom home in New Amsterdam on Thursday.
Flames were initially seen emanating from the upper flat of the Second Street, Overwinning, Greater New Amsterdam home. At the time of the fire, Hazmon Mohamed, her grandson and a friend were in the house.
According to Mohamed, she and a friend were seated under the house and as she got up to use the washroom, she heard a strange sound coming from the roof.
She said initially she thought that her grandson had chased the ducks and they landed on the roof but it was her friend who told her that the house was on fire.
Mohamed said she saw flames in the back room. “I did not go upstairs, I just peeped from downstairs and I see the fire blazing… Heavy fire in the back room.” Within minutes the three bedroom house was engulfed.
According to the 67-year-old woman, the bedroom in which the flames were first seen contained a few pieces of furniture and was being used as a store room.
Another occupant of the house, Sabrina Jaffar, was not at home when the fire was detected but told <<<<Inew>>>> that no electrical appliances are used in the bedroom where the flames originated.
Neighbours formed a bucket brigade to extinguish the blaze but soon after, the Guyana Fire Service responded with two units and within a few minutes, the blaze was under control.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
