[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, on Wednesday, handed over three, 65 HSP-Double wheel drive tractors, along with three Bison Hydraulic lift trailers, to three Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Four, Demerara/Mahaica.
The handing over ceremony, which was held at the Diamond Community Centre Ground, saw representatives of Soesdyke/Hust’Coverden, Caledonia/Good Success, and Mocha/Arcadia NDCs receiving the vehicles, along with 25, 45-gallon bins each.
Each NDC benefited from approximately $5.7M as the vehicles were procured at an individual cost of $4.43M for a tractor, and $1.25M for a trailer, and the 25 bins at $4,500 each.
Grove/Diamond Place, Little Diamond/Herstelling and Ramsburg/Eccles NDCs did not receive vehicles, but they each benefited from 25 bins.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker presented the representatives of the various NDCs with their equipment. He also pointed out that the initiative was government’s fulfillment of its promise to citizens.
The vehicles and bins were procured under the “Clean up My Country” initiative, under the $1B national allocation, to ensure its sustainability, and aid in garbage collection and disposal in the NDCs.
Minister Whittaker urged the representatives to make full use of the bins and tractors, and to also ensure their full productive life span.
Meanwhile, Region Four’s Regional Executive Officer (REO), Deolall Rooplall expressed gratitude to the ministry, for the initiative and the support that it has given to the region, over the years.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and the NDCs, for the use and management of the vehicles and bins.
Other Region Four NDCs are also slated to receive tractors, trailers and bins. On Wednesday as well, 12 NDCs in Region Three received similar equipment from the Local Government Ministry. [Extracted and modified from GINA]
