[www.inewsguyana.com] – Twenty – six – year old Arshad Ali of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by Magistrate Ann McLennan on a simple larceny charge.
The defendant, a Seaman, pleaded guilty to the charge, which stated that on December 10 at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, he stole a hand bag containing cash $22,000 and Motorola cellular phone together valued $53,000, property of Hazel Limmerick.
Police Prosecutor, Dinero Jones told the Court that on the day in question at around 06:30hrs, Limmerick, a vendor, was at her stall, which is located in the Bazaar section of the market.
The Court heard that that Limmerick left her hand bag at her stall when Ali snatched it and ran towards Leopold Street.
The matter was reported and the cellular phone was recovered on his person. However, Limmerick told the Court that he found the items in a garbage heap.
