Despite going down 4-0 to England in the recently concluded ODI series, West Indies batsman Jason Mohammed still believes the team will qualify for the next One Day International World Cup.

The West Indies needed to defeat England 4-0 and not lose the fifth ODI to automatically qualify, but even though the intentions and the results were reversed, Mohammed remains confident that the two-time champions will make it through the upcoming qualifiers.

For those qualifiers, the Windies will meet Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, along with ICC World Cricket League Championship nations like Scotland, Kenya and Hong Kong. Mohammed believes the Windies have the necessary tools to take them past these teams.

“I think that with the senior guys back and with much of the guys being youngsters, hopefully, we can get the combination right and play the type of cricket we know that we can play in order to qualify for the World Cup,” Mohammed surmised.

He does concede, however, that the team will have to work harder to get closer the standard required for the Windies to be competitive against the best teams in the world. Among the things that need to improve is strike rotation.

“In the middle part of the innings there is always a lot of dot balls,” Mohammed said, highlighting that that was a major issue during the final match that the West Indies lost by nine wickets, despite making 288 off their allotment of overs.

“(On Friday) again it was the same thing so I think it is something that we have to work on and try and rotate the strike a little bit more and in the end finish off strongly like we have been doing.” (SportsMax)
