Twenty – three – year old Jarrel Griffith; a miner of Baramita Region One was today remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer two charges: possession of a .38 revolver and one matching round without a license.
Griffith pleaded not guilty to both offences which read that on July 16 at Baramita, he had the items on his possession and at the time he had no license.
Police Prosecutor Vernette Pinder told the Court that on the day in question at about 06:30h, the accused was seen walking on the Baramita Airstrip acting in a suspicious manner.
According to the Prosecutor, the accused was stopped and searched in which the unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found. Prosecutor Pindar also said Griffith was told about the offence, when he allegedly admitted to having the items and told the ranks that he was given the firearm and ammunition to take to Brazil.
Based on the seriousness of the offence and the penalty it attracts, the Prosecutor objected to bail. He was remanded and will make his next court appearance on August 6 at the Mathews Ridge Magistrate’s Court. [Royan Abrams]
