Miner gets $400,000 bail on fraud charge

A miner who allegedly wrote a cheque for over $800,000 knowing that he was not in receipt of that sum was on Monday charged with the offence of fraud.

58-year-old, Micheal Boodhoo of Coven Garden denied that he defrauded businesswoman Latchmie Singh.

It is being alleged that Boodhoo on December 11, 2016 at Georgetown with intent to defraud uttered to Singh one forged Republic Bank cheque valued $844,000.

On the same day at the said location, the defendant obtained from Singh arch panel doors and windows by way of the said cheque #7406 valued at $844,000, allegedly knowing same to be forged.

On December 9, 2016, Boodhoo ordered the items from Singh’s place of business. On December 11, his order was delivered by Singh, whom he gave the cheque to.

However, when Singh visited the Republic Bank on the said day to cash the said cheque, it was revealed to her that the said sum was not available in the defendant’s account.

As such, the matter was reported to the Police and Boodhoo was arrested and later charged.

He received bail in the sum of $400,000 and is expected to make his next Court appearance on June 28, 2018.
