Miner, Canadian Fiancé remanded on drug charges

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A miner and his fiancé, accused of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, were remanded by Magistrate Ann McLennan following their appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 24.

It is alleged that 45 – year – old Hubert Nathaniel Bartholomew and his fiancé, 27 – year – old Roshell Gittens, who is a Canadian Citizen, on August 22 at 58 House Street, Charlestown Georgetown had in their possession 1.550 kg of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

They both pleaded not guilty to the offence. According to the Prosecution, the police acting on information went to the residence of Bartholomew and saw them attempting to flush the illegal substance down the toilet.

They were then arrested and taken into police custody; however, the Attorney for both defendants, Latchmi Rahamat explained to the Magistrate that on the day in question, in the wee hours of the morning, the two accused along with their children were awaken by the police breaking down their door.

According to the lawyer, the defendants were taken into custody and placed inside a waiting minibus outside while the police continued their search inside the house.

The court heard that the police seized the passport of the Canadian woman along with the passport belonging to her son, who is also a Canadian citizen. Bail was denied and the duo was remanded to prison; they are expected to make their next court appearance on September 14.
