[www.inewsguyana.com] – A miner of Third Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on drug trafficking charges.
Shawn David pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which alleged that on February 15 at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni River, he had in his possession 9 grammes of cocaine, for the purpose of trafficking.
Particulars of the other charge alleged that on the same day, he also had in his possession 196 grammes of marijuana. According to Police Prosecutor Michael Grant, on the day in question ranks were on patrol duties when they observed David standing on the landing and acting in a suspicious manner.
A search was carried out on his haversack, which contained a black plastic bag. A further search on the plastic bag revealed two transparent bags, one containing the alleged cocaine and the other concealing marijuana.
The unrepresented man told the Court that he has no prior or pending matter. Prosecutor Grant successfully opposed bail on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
David was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for February 26.
