A miner of the Mahdia area, on Wednesday, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan after he was accused of stealing 19 pennyweights of raw gold from a man known to him.
Colin Sherwin Jerome, 37 of 222 Amelia’s Ward, Linden, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge against him alleged that, he, on June 22 2017 at Potato River, Essequibo stole 19 pennyweights of raw gold from Anil Patan valuing $190,000.
The Police Prosecutor told the Court that the Virtual Complainant (VC) on the day in question burnt the gold and left it to go have a shower. However, upon his return, he saw the defendant removing the gold, after which he ran away.
The matter was reported and the defendant was arrested a few miles away from the scene.
He was found to still be in possession of 5.7 pennyweights of the gold. As such he was arrested and charged.
The prosecution had no bail objections but asked that it be substantial.
The defendant was granted $70,000 bail and will next appear at the Mahdia Magistrate Court on July 18 2017.
