[www.inewsguyana.com] – Beepat, under its Nestle’s Milo brand, will host the third edition of the Milo Under-20 School Football Championship organised by the Petra Organisation.

At the launching on Tuesday, January 20 at the company’s Regent Street headquarters, Petra’s Director, Troy Mendonca was confident that the tournament will be yet another success.

“Petra is proud to present the third annual school football championship and we are thankful for the support of Milo, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education. We have seen the tournament grow from strength to strength and we want to encourage the parents and guardians to come out and support their kids and share the passion,” Mendonca noted.

Chief Education Officer (CEO) of the Ministry of Education, Olato Sam stressed the importance of sport in the school system.

“We realise that sport can contribute to the educational system and we are now trying to implement some rules and guidelines to ensure that our athletes are not going to school to play football but to also learn.

“This is the first time we are trying something like this and the main objective is for us to develop well-rounded individuals, because the only way sports will move forward with programmes like these is if we have athletes that can think the game and perform on the field at the same time,” Sam stated.

Renita Sital, Brand Manager of Milo is adamant that more parents be involved in the tournament.

“Milo is pleased to be a part of the tournament, but one of the things we would like to see is for the parents to come out and witness what their kids are doing because they are talented kids.”

The tournament is expected to start on January 31 with 32 teams set to take part. The teams will be divided into eight groups of four with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stages.

Lodge Secondary School will have a chance to defend their title and take home the $500,000 school project first place prize.
