PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands – Turks and Caicos Islands emergency services responded to an incident at South Dock, Providenciales, on Wednesday morning, when a sloop believed to be carrying suspected illegal immigrants capsized while being towed to the dock.
The vessel had been intercepted by the Marine Branch of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) and capsized as it was being towed into dock by the RTCIPF to offload the suspects.
Reports indicate that 18 migrants drowned in the incident and 32 people were rescued from the water. Others were reported to have reached the shore and escaped. Those rescued are now in custody, and those who escaped were being searched for. (Caribbean News Now)
