[www.inewsguyana.com] – City Mayor Hamilton Green has come out in full support of the combined Opposition’s calls for Clement Rohee to demit office as Home Affairs Minister.
Green, who hails from the People’s National Congress (PNC), while speaking in his capacity as Mayor, expressed concern over the recent purported upsurge in criminal activity in and around Georgetown.
“I am calling on the government to take action and have the Minister demit office or listen to the opposition and put in place mechanism to avoid these tragic conditions of crime”, the Mayor said at a press conference on Tuesday, September 24.
He said Rohee’s attempt to blame the opposition for the escalation in crime is absurd and quite the opposite of what is the case. The Mayor believes the current congestion in the city and unemployment are the conditions under which a criminal environment is being fostered.
“Criminality is mimicked when you have it at the highest level”, he added, while calling for a holistic approach to tackle the crime situation.
Opposition Leader David Granger is of the opinion that the longer Rohee is in charge of the security of Guyana, crime will continue to escalate.
The political opposition parties have been calling for Rohee’s removal for over a year now and according to the APNU, the Party is exploring other options aimed at removing the Home Affairs Minister from office.
The APNU had moved a no confidence motion against Rohee, which was passed in the National Assembly.
However the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has refused to have the Minister demit office and has laid the blame for the crime situation on the opposition.
