Thirty – Seven – year old Mark Singh of Regent Street Bourda appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer two counts of common assault which he allegedly committed against his son Anthony Singh and his wife Surjata Persaud.
The accused pleaded guilty to the assault charge against his wife but a not guilty plea was entered based on his explanation in relation to the assault committed on his son.
The court was told that on July 25, the defendant arrived home drunk and asked his son for a cellular phone.
The prosecutor related that Anthony Singh refused to give up the phone and his father then armed himself with a broom and dealt him several lashes about his genitals during which the mother tried to intervene and was choked by the neck.
Based on the information presented in court, the Magistrate sentenced Mark Singh to six months in prison for the assault against his wife and ordered that he return to court on August 05 for trial for the assault against his son. [Royan Abrams]
