[www.inewsguyana.com] – Forty-year-old Jermaine Maynard of Leopold and Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust was today remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for the unlawful killing of his 20 – year old ex-girlfriend.
The accused, with his left hand in a sling stood quietly and was not required to plea to the indictable offence, which alleged that between Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1 at Croal Street, Georgetown, he murdered Carlissa Matthews.
The prosecution was led by Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, who informed the court that the deceased and the accused shared a relationship which ended a few months ago.
He added that on the day in question around 23:50 hrs the deceased was standing by KFC around Stabroek area, when she was approached the accused.
It is alleged that he pulled out a gun and shot her to the head. Mathews fell to the ground and was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. It was reported that around 02:15 hrs on January 1, she succumbed to the injuries received.
Maynard was apprehended and arrested at Springlands Corentyne, Berbice on January 2 and there are nine witnesses to testify in the matter.
He was represented by Attorney-at-Law George Thomas, who requested an early date for commencement of Preliminary Inquiry (PI) and the matter was put off for February 10.
