[www.inewsguyanaom] – A 38 – year – old man accused of beating his bedridden father to death with a piece of wood was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Monday, January 19.
Ali Mohamed, of Lot 38 Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to the indictable offence which alleged that on January 13, at Providence he murdered 83 – year – old Mohamed Suleiman.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Prosecutor, Stephen Telford told the Court that on the day in question, the sister of the accused called him for his medication.
According to Telford, it was then that Mohamed armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the woman several lashes causing her to run out of the house. The Prosecutor said that the accused went into the bedroom where his father, who had been bedridden after he suffered a stroke, was and dealt the elderly man several lashes with the wood.
The man was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He subsequently died.
The accused was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat who said that his client was “sick in his mind.” The lawyer requested that Mohamed be examined by a psychiatrist to ascertain whether he is fit to stand trial.
A psychological evaluation was ordered and the case will be called again on February 27.
