A suspected car thief is now in police custody after he attempted to hijack a Prado Sports Utility Vehicle on Saturday evening.
The vehicle belongs to a female resident of Garnett Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.
According to information reaching this publication, the incident occurred sometime after 19:00h when the woman returned home and parked her vehicle under her house.
Neighbours told this publication that they saw a man entering the woman’s yard but first took him for the woman’s nephew.
After the man entered the yard, he attempted to hotwire the car. During this time, residents realised that he was not the woman’s nephew and immediately raised an alarm.
Shortly after, residents surrounded the car, but the man continued to hotwire the vehicle in a bid to escape, but this failed. He was then taken out of the car and given a sound thrashing my residents. However, he managed to escape and plunged into a nearby trench. By this time ranks from the Prashad Nagar Police Station arrived at the scene and promptly captured him. Investigations are ongoing.
