A “chic chic” game ended on a fatal note after a former Police Officer went berserk, which led to the death of a 44-year-old carpenter while three other men were injured, 2 of whom remain hospitalized in serious conditions.
This is as a social gathering on Saturday evening went array after the ex-cop turned against his companions, chopping one of the men and subsequently running down the crowd that rushed to the aid of the victim with a minibus.
Dead is Amit Roy Jairam also known as “Rocky” of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, who succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, hours after the incident.
Meanwhile, those injured are 23-year-old Premnauth Basdeo, 22-year-old Randy Melville and 43-year-old Mohamed Ahamad, all of whom are from Meten-Meer-Zorg as well.
According to information received, the episode stemmed from a misunderstanding which broke out during a ‘game of chance’ at a Bar-B-Que event held at Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, around 21:30hrs Saturday night.
Reports are that, one of the men had lost the game but was nevertheless requesting a refund of the money which he had wagered. As a result, a fight eventually broke out.
This publication understands that it was then that the 54-year-old former Police Officer, enraged over the dispute which had arisen, venture into his minibus only to return with a cutlass. Using the weapon, the ex-cop fired a blow at Ahamad, inflicting a wound to his head.
A crowd immediately gathered around the injured 43-year-old man and while taken up with rendering assistance they did not realise what was coming their way.
It was then that the suspect had returned to his vehicle (minibus BTT5707) and in an act of malice turned on the engine and drove right into the crowd. Jairam, who was initially attempting to part the brawl, was struck down by the minibus, sustaining several injuries to his head and about the body.
As if that what not enough, the berserk former GPF rank reversed his vehicle and went at it again at an even faster rate, this time striking down the two other victims who were also among the persons attending to the injured. As a result of the collision, they were all rendered unconscious.
The four victims were picked up and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were treated and transferred to the Georgetown medical institution in light of the severity of their injuries.
However, it was while receiving medical attention at the GPHC that Jairam took his last breath, early Sunday morning. Doctors tended to Ahamad’s laceration and he was later sent home. However, the two younger men remain hospitalised and are not yet out of the woods.
According to a relative of Basdeo, the 23-year-old, who is a bus driver, is left nursing a broken left arm for which he is expected to undergo surgery. The woman also pointed out that Melville has been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is said to be in a critical state.
