Man found with knife accused of assaulting four Police Officers

Kevin Charles was today charged with disorderly behavior, possession of a knife and assaulting four police constables.

Charles appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry and pleaded not guilty to all three charges. It is alleged that on August 23 at Brickdam police station he had a knife in his possession without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

On the same day at Church Street Georgetown, the accused behaved disorderly during which he assaulted police constables Jermaine Brown, Deochand Sookdeo, Ferod Wilson and Joel Benjamin.

According to the allegations, police were on mobile patrol when they stopped and searched the accused during which a knife was found and at that time, the accused could not gave a valid reason for having the weapon.

According the prosecutor, the accused started to shout and refused to be taken to the Brickdam Police Station. Charles resisted the officers and hence the assault occurred.

Based on the information presented in court, the Magistrate sent off the accused on his own recognizance with his next court appearance set for September 16. [Royan Abrams]
