Vindra Siriram will spend the next 22 years in prison for unlawfully killing his common law wife Shelly Ann Persaud, whose lifeless body was found with her head submerged in a bucket of water at their Friendship, East Bank Demerara home on June 10, 2014.

High Court judge James Bovell Drakes urged him to use this time to re-evaluate his conduct.

The couple had three children who were reportedly present while they argued just moments before the woman’s demise in 2014.

Siriram told this publication that the sentence was fair, while holding out that he never killed his spouse even though he was found guilty by majority jury last month.

A post mortem examination had revealed that Persaud died as a result of drowning and manual strangulation.

The pathologist had testified that there were marks of violence about the body and signs of compression as if someone forced her head down.

Persaud was 25 years old at the time of her demise and she was said to have dropped out of school during the relationship.
