Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 50-year-old Dexter Carmichael of Plantation Hope, West Coast Berbice.
Carmichael, who was employed by a mining operation in the Puruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) was on Wednesday found dead in the river with suspected gasoline burns on his skin.
Police said on the day in question, the man was consuming alcohol and at around 18:30hrs, he went onto a boat that was laden in fuel.
About 20:00hrs, the boat was discovered sunken and Carmichael’s body was floating in the water.
The body was retrieved and escorted to Bartica and subsequently to Georgetown at the Memorial Garden’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a postmortem examination.
Police said detectives who examined the body observed what appeared to be gasoline burns on the man’s shoulder.
