A man who attempted to steal two galvanised zinc sheets from the roof of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Sports Complex building was on Monday fined after he admitted to the offence.
Thirty-year-old Andrew Arjune admitted that he did attempt to commit the act on February 28, 2018 at Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
The defendant told Magistrate Judy Latchman that the building was old and the zinc sheets fell from the roof to the ground.
According to Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore, the Secretary of the Union received a call informing him that someone was removing the galvanised sheets from the Sports Complex yard.
He informed the Police of same, and they went to the location and saw Arjune, who they arrested.
The defendant when questioned by Magistrate Latchman told her that he removed the sheets “to see if anybody want buy it”.
The man, who was previously charged for stealing from his uncle, however, begged the Magistrate for mercy.
He was fined G$30,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in him serving two weeks’ imprisonment.
