A 40-year-old man is now dead after he was struck to the head by an excavator boom at Big Hope Backdam, Waini River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Dead is Ricky Persaud, also known as “Swank”, a cook of Lima Village, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). He was employed with a mining company owned by a businessman named Navin Singh.
Police said on Thursday, Persaud along with a 34-year-old excavator operator were heading to work on the excavator when they observed a fallen tree along the roadway.
As such, Persaud reportedly came off the excavator and the driver began operating the excavator’s boom to remove the fallen tree.
During the process, the excavator boom struck Persaud to his head.
As a result of the impact, Persaud fell to the ground and deep lacerations were observed on his head.
According to information provided by the police, it was only today that the body was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) where the man was pronounced dead.
The driver of the excavator is in police custody assisting with investigations.
